Grandma's Nutcracker

My grandma loved collecting nutcrackers and they decorated her house pretty much all year instead of just Christmas. A few months before she passed away she asked me to make her a nutcracker doll. She was also a knitter, but had to stop crafting because of arthritis. I am glad that she could have this small piece of 2 things she enjoyed: yarn and nutcrackers. She also loved basketball, and I know that my little 2 year old who loves it as well would have made her so proud!

Materials Needed:
Worsted weight in colors: bright red, dark red, green, light blue, dark brown, beige, black or dark brown for the belt, and sparkly gold (I used 2 strands of Vanna’s Glamour because it is not worsted).
Black felt for the face
9 mm safety eyes (or use doll joints if you have them)
Polyfil stuffing
Star and gem sequins (or you can use buttons).
Super glue
Hot glue
D Hook
Scissors
Darning Needle
Stitch holder (this is worked in the rounds and a stitch holder is helpful to remember where each round starts)
Glue spray (I use Stiffen Stuff spray)

Abbreviations:
Sc= single crochet
Hdc= half double crochet
Dc= double crochet
Dec= decrease by one stitch (this is a sc dec unless noted otherwise)
Inc= Increase by one stitch (this is a sc inc unless noted otherwise)
Sc3tog= Single crochet 3 stitches together (another decrease). Pull up a loop in 3 stitches, yarn over and pull through all 3.
Sl st= slip stitch
Ch= chain
( ) x a number= complete this step however many times indicated after the “x”
BLO= crochet in the back loop only
FLO= crochet in the front loop only

Note:
The numbers in ( ) at the end of each round indicates how many stitches are in the round.
When making a color change, cut the yarn and weave in ends instead of carrying the yarn.
When making a color change, complete the previous stitch in the new color.
The magic ring (or circle) technique is used throughout this pattern. If you are unfamiliar with this technique you can find a great video here: http://www.mooglyblog.com/the-magic-circle/
If you are making this for a small child, please do not use small parts that are choking hazards (such as the safety eyes and sequins).

To attach, insert hook from bottom to top through the loop, bring through a strand, and grab the yarn, and pull through.

Cut 10 brown strands 10 inches long and lay together as shown in picture. Double knot with another 10 inch strand in the middle of the bunch and pin to head in the center and let the strands drape over the head from shoulder to shoulder.
